Biography
Michael McCarthy is an Associate Professor at Utica University and the Director of Data Science. He received his BS from the United States Military Academy at West Point in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). He earned his MA and PhD in Geography from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. His thesis quantitatively analyzed the airline industry by metropolitan area. His doctoral dissertation was a quantitative and qualitative analysis of creative workers in the United States.
Upon receiving his doctorate, Michael served as an analyst for a Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He performed quantitative and qualitative analyses to improve inpatient and outpatient clinic flow and quantitative demographic analysis for strategic planning. He also coached and led Lean projects, and served as an Innovation Specialist. Michael has worked with non-profit foundations, start ups, and major tech companies.
Prior to graduate school, Michael served in the Army from 2000 to 2007 as an Aviation Officer and Blackhawk pilot. He concluded his Army tenure serving at the US Army’s Training and Doctrine Command where he was part of a team analyzing future warfare and global trends that would affect the United States and its military in the next five decades.
